Urbane Innovations Velo Sport Hangers

Posted: Nov 28, 2008

Sometimes I get home after a race or a good ride and can't help thinking that putting my riding gear in the closet and forgetting about it is a disgrace to the gear that keeps me comfortable and safe day in and day out...

We all have one; our favorite shirt that is so thin we can see our own chest hair through it, our favorite pair of pants with the growing hole on the left knee. Sometimes I find myself thinking I would like to show these articles of clothing off more often than just during riding sessions. But so far the only way I have figured out how to do this is by throwing them in a pile on my floor.

Enter the velo sport hanger. These sleek hangers were designed by Jeff Keller owner of Sunrise Cyclery in Logan, UT. Made completely out of bicycle wheel parts (rims, spokes, nipples, stems) these little gems exude style. The best part is that you can customize them by choosing which anodized color you want and then writing down your own quote or choosing from several bike related quotes that are already made. If you have a logo or design you want engraved, no problem, they can even do that.

Besides providing a great way to display your winning race jersey or your favorite holey shirt, these hangers unique curved shape eliminates the "shoulder nipple" that many synthetic materials are plagued by when they are hung on conventional hangers. Just one more way to tell your gear you appreciate all the hard work it does to keep you simply riding...

Sunrise is also manufacturing these hangers out of recycled rims. They have created a kit which provides the instructions and some supplies so that other bike shops can create hangers out of used rims they are tossing. If you are a shop and interested in recycling your trash, give 'em a call.

The hangers are currently available on the Sunrise Cyclery website or by calling 435-753-3294, orders for quotes or logos must be made over the phone.

Rims for chairs, couches, tables. old tubes for "cushions", table would need glass. Brake rotor for a clock backing.

clever with the rims however i just toss my stuff on the closet floor and do not worry about "disgracing" an inanimate object

it a good idea but i dont think you could make money out of it, after one person sees it, they will just go home, get a busted rim and make their own.

$24.99 US for one hanger, sounds a little expensive when you probably need at least 50 to fill your closet! Great idea, however not really affordable.

the product has been patented. so if you wish to make them out of your shop it would be a good idea to buy the dealer kit. then your not stealing someone else's idea...

How can you patent a product that uses someone elses product in the construction process?

flag NWray (Dec 3, 2008 at 12:40) (Below Threshold) show comment
the product it self isn't the patent. It's the idea behind the product thats patented. just thought i would put that out there, 'cause yes u cant patent a product that is made of another product that you don't own the patent to.Big Grin

flag Phil-rides-a-bike (Dec 3, 2008 at 15:16)
wouldnt that just mean you couldnt sell it and make your own profits from it?
  • - 3
flag NWray (Dec 3, 2008 at 15:40)
you could make your own profits if you called them up and said that u wanted the package or w/e they mentioned in the article

flag stephbowcycle (Dec 4, 2008 at 11:23)
Well, if they just patented it in the US, then all these guys from other countries could make it no problem. As well, their patent is only valid as long as they're going to sue people/companies that make them (defent their patent) which they're probably not going to do just for some grom (mainly because they won't know about it). I can see if some shop started to mass produce them, something might happen... but there's really nothing stopping any grom from making these in his garage for his own purposes.

HA "patented" whatever. Everyone is gonna make em and you all know it, they are way overpriced and they are made out of a bunch of FREE bent hoops that were probably on there way to the scrap yard anyways. And nobody is gonna cut up a brand new wheel just to make some nifty hangers.

Actually, the ones you see for sale are made out of new rims, thus the custom anodizing as well as choice of engraved quotes or perhaps a custom quote as a nice gift... In the article it states that the recycled ones are made by shops themselves in order to reduce the amount of waste going to the trash. However, as this idea is not there own and there are some tricks to making good ones, sunrise asks shops to purchase the rights along with a kit that would allow them to make them out of their shop. Hope that clears up some of the miss-information I am reading.

Some Specs on the Velo Hangers. The spoke hook for hanging is made from a stainless steel 12 gauge spoke smashed to fit correctly into the gutless Schrader valve stem. FYI The 12 gauge spoke hook is over 3 times stronger than a 14 gauge spoke hook. For hanging shorts and pants the new Velo Sport Hangers have a twine set of long, 392 mm double threaded SS 14 gauge spokes spanning from end to end of the rim section. We will post more pictures on Sunrise cyclery.net to show these added details as well as how to make the Velo Sport Hanger the best for bibs and more.
